Gigabit broadband internet is coming to all of Fort Collins
Fort Collins Connection is committed to providing affordable, reliable high-speed Internet access to every home and business within the city limits, and we’re on track to provide gigabit service to the entire community. Every week, we discover new neighborhoods and sign up clients.
The 100% community-owned fiber optic network design and construction plan enables us to provide service efficiently and quickly. To adhere to the city’s history of burying utility lines in order to improve reliability and maintain the aesthetics of the community, Connexion fiber will be installed underground.
The first phase is the design of a subset of houses, also known as a fiber distribution hub (FDH). The second phase is the construction of the FDH.
Once the design of an HDD is complete, it proceeds to build allowing more than one HDD to be under construction at the same time. This process maximizes efficiency and the use of resources. You can follow the progress of our HDD in our quarterly reports located at fcconnexion.com.
The first phase, designing an HDD, can take a few months and includes studying the existing fiber, determining where the new fiber should be installed, sealing the duct, drafting permits and conducting field studies.
Construction takes the longest time to complete, an average of 6 to 9 months per neighborhood. There are factors that can potentially impact the schedule, including redesigning to accommodate utility easements or rebuilding the electrical system, railways, highways, canals and unplanned underground infrastructure.
The first sign that construction is coming to your neighborhood is the location. You can see flags and spray paint marking underground utility lines. These locations help our teams know what is underground before they dig.
Changes have been made to the 811 locator law over the past few years and we encourage all HOAs in Fort Collins to register their private infrastructure with Colorado 811 to avoid unforeseen damage and repair costs.
We are co-hosting a free information session at 4 p.m. December 8. To RSVP, visit https://hoa811.eventbrite.com. Additional information is available on our website at fcconnexion.com/hoa.
Construction is disruptive and includes waves of intense activity mixed with periods of very low activity. We understand that it is not ideal to have multiple teams and large equipment in your neighborhood for weeks at a time and we sincerely appreciate your patience.
Ultimately, however, all of this hard work will produce one of the best networks in the country, providing gigabit speed internet access to all of Fort Collins.
