Dell’Oro cuts private wireless forecast by 20%

Dell’Oro Group, in a brief press release, said private wireless radio access network (RAN) shipments and revenue were again below expectations, resulting in a “short-term downgrade”.

The analyst firm now expects annual LTE/5G wireless private small cell revenues – hardware only – to reach between $800 million and $1 billion by the end of its 2022-26 forecast period.

“We’ve reduced private wireless’s small cell share by about a fifth over the forecast period,” Stefan Pongratz, vice president and analyst at Dell’Oro, told Light Reading.

“Partly that’s because we’ve received new data suggesting the starting point is a bit lower than we originally modeled. In addition to the different absolute levels, the progress over the past six months has something bit disappointed.

“To be clear,” Pongratz added, “the demand for private wireless is growing, but not as fast as we originally anticipated.”

In the longer term, looking to 2030, Pongratz believed that the total addressable market for private wireless networks was still a “great market opportunity”, but that it would take some time to realize its full potential.
