NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) – New Britain is trying to bridge the digital divide by building a high-speed fiber optic internet network across its city.

The $6 million project is made possible with funds from the American Rescue Plan Act, not municipal tax money.

Mayor Erin Stewart said there was always a need for high-speed internet access in New Britain, but it was really the pandemic that made it a need.

“Our children and students have had to adapt to online learning, but one of the things we’ve seen is that our students don’t have access to affordable, high-quality internet,” said Stewart said.

New Britain will become the first community in the state to partner with GoNetspeed in a partnership to bring reliable internet to residents.

The company participates in the federal Affordable Connectivity Program which provides eligible households with up to $30 per month for the service.

“Everything is 100% fiber-based, it’s future-proof, there’s nothing faster than fiber, and it comes at an affordable price, bringing competition into the market. “said Tom Perrone, COO of GoNetspeed.

With setup fees waived, free routers, and plans starting at $39.99 per month, GoNetspeed hopes to attract many more cities and towns with their affordable prices.

“We are trying to work with all the cities, we think now is the time, the government and the public are looking for this high-speed infrastructure, there is money associated with building it, so we are talking with everyone “, says Perron.

The project will start in January 2023 and will take about six months to set up. After that, 175 miles of fiber will run through town ready for use.

Global Internet Access J Xwd

As the Internet Society (ISOC) celebrates its 30th anniversary as a global non-profit organization advocating for an open and globally connected Internet, the organization calls for accelerated action to continue the development of Internet throughout the African region.

At the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC) 2022 taking place in Kigali, Rwanda under the theme “Connecting the Unconnected to Achieve Sustainable Development”, Dawit Bekele, Regional Vice President of the Internet Society in Africa, welcomed progress made by stakeholders in expanding access across the continent, while encouraging more collaborative efforts to bridge the digital divide.

Sub-Saharan Africa has the strongest growth in global Internet penetration, rising from less than 1% in 2000 to 30% today. Between 2019 and 2021, internet usage in Africa jumped by 23%. Despite this impressive growth, there is still a coverage gap of more than 840 million people who lack access to reliable and affordable internet access.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the value of internet connectivity, which has been an essential lifeline for the continuity of business, healthcare, education, government and other critical activities.

We applaud the significant investments over the past decades to develop Internet infrastructure, which have made the Internet accessible to more people across the continent. However, the pandemic is also highlighting the remaining digital divide, especially in rural, remote and even urban areas around the world,” said Dawit Bekele.
In Ghana in particular, ISOC has a local chapter that continues to develop an Internet exchange point and organizes technical training events to encourage and promote Internet policies, standards and protocols that keep the Internet open, connected to the Internet. globally and secure.
Community networks are a way to help bridge the digital divide.

They are communications infrastructure built, managed and used by local communities and are a sustainable solution to fill connectivity gaps in underserved areas. The Internet Society has a long history of working with communities around the world to fund, create, and train people with the skills to manage and maintain community networks.

In Africa, the Internet Society has helped create community networks in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, Namibia, Morocco, Senegal, and Ethiopia.

At WTDC, the organization will commit to supporting 100 complementary solutions to connect the unconnected and train 10,000 people to build and maintain internet infrastructure, all by 2025 as part of the Partner2Connect Digital Coalition, a initiative led by the European International Telecommunications Union (ITU) that aims to drive meaningful connectivity and digital transformation in the hardest-to-connect communities around the world.

Interconnection between local networks, content providers and users is also essential to the expansion of the Internet throughout Africa. Currently, millions of dollars are spent every year to route local internet traffic over expensive international links. This not only makes the Internet slower and more expensive for Internet users, but it also limits the types of applications that can run on the local Internet. For this reason, the Internet Society has been at the forefront of supporting the creation and growth of Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) that enable and encourage local traffic.

ISOC research shows that IXPs improve the end-user experience, reduce the cost of access, and stimulate the development of local Internet ecosystems and cross-border interconnections. By improving local Internet services and reducing their costs, well-managed IXPs open up new worlds of possibilities with a modest investment.

San Juan Bautista will also have a new choice for Internet service.

Two new projects in San Juan Bautista and Aromas promise to bring better Internet access to residents and businesses in the near future. Students and others living outside of current service areas will especially benefit from the expanded service.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held June 8 at Anzar High School to celebrate the Rotary Club of San Juan Bautista and the Aromas-San Juan Community Schools Foundation qualifying for a $200,000 federal matching grant to complete the first project: the purchase of information technology equipment to upgrade Internet access for the entire Aromas-San Juan Unified School District at speeds of up to .

“As we become more and more successful in providing services that allow students to connect to the Internet, you must have a sufficiently robust system,” said Phil Esparza, chair of the Rotary Access Committee. “This project means that school sites will be able to cope with the increased demand from students for the next three to five years.”

To secure the funding, Rotary had to raise $40,000, from local businesses, foundations and private donors to help bridge the digital divide, which is a problem across the country.

“It appeared to us that around 20-25% of students had little or no internet access for various reasons,” said Esparaza, who is also a BenitoLink board member. “This means that a significant number of students have not been able to follow during the pandemic. Internet service is not considered a public service, and it should be. It’s harder to serve areas like ours, so we end up having leftovers when it comes to the internet.

Rotary’s first solution was to purchase mobile hotspots at the start of the pandemic, with a range of 150 feet which they stationed at various locations around schools.

“We made sure every student in the district had access to Chromebooks and personal hotspots,” Esparza said. “This is the second year that there is 100% access for all students. But we wanted to provide a more permanent solution for schools. And our next project will be to have Internet access in the homes of every student.

The first phase of the program is expected to last 12 to 18 months, depending on the hardware supply chain. But once complete, the school district will have access from San Juan Canyon to Aromas and two-thirds of the way to Hollister.

San Juan Bautista will benefit from an internet access upgrade as the city works with Etheric Networks to install equipment on the town’s water reservoir that will expand internet access both in the city and in areas outside the city that are underserved.

“It will be broadcast to provide better coverage at a greater distance,” Councilman John Freeman said. “They promise to provide speeds equivalent to what Charter currently offers, but this will reach areas that are beyond their service reach. And they also promise competitive rates.

For comparison, Charter/Spectrum offers speeds of up to 100 mps starting at $49.95 for service to San Juan Bautista.

The scope of service will be based on line of sight, which extends to the San Juan Valley, areas around Freitas and Lucy Brown roads, and possibly the Rancho Larios area. The city of San Juan Bautista will also be covered.

Freeman said the city hopes the project will launch in July, but like the school project, it depends on the supply chain.

“It always takes longer than people think,” he said. “We were promised this a year ago, but they had problems getting the parts for the antenna and the relay stations. So we had a significant setback in terms of the weather, but that’s kind of the way the economy is right now.

The city leases space for equipment in exchange for Internet access for City Hall, Community Center and Luck Library. This will most likely be fiber optic cable and faster access than what is available to residential users.

Donors to the Aromas-San Juan Schools Project include:

Rotary Club of San Juan Bautista: $10,000,

San Benito Health Foundation: $6,500

ASJ Community Schools Foundation: $5,000

Taylor Farms: $5,000

Supervisor Kollin Kosmicki: $3,000

It has been clear for years that high-speed Internet access is not a privilege, but a necessity that is the key to academic, professional and personal success.

The federal government has recognized this reality by including $65 billion in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 to help bring broadband to underserved areas of the country.

The truth is that we have a lot of catching up to do, and while infrastructure funding is essential, it is only one piece of the puzzle. For too many families, high-speed internet remains both out of reach and unaffordable. According to the Federal Communications Commission, 19 million Americans nationwide do not have access to broadband with basic speeds.

In New York, the largest share of households without internet access are in New York and Long Island – and 14% of households earning less than $30,000, as well as nearly 10% of households earning less than $50,000 do not have access to it.

Governor Kathy Hochul is delivering one of the most aggressive and transformative broadband plans in the nation. The governor’s ConnectALL plan aims to connect all New Yorkers to broadband, regardless of income or where they live.

SUNY also has a role to play. As current students complete their college semesters and return home for the summer, and incoming students prepare for the fall, we are working to connect eligible students to the Federal Affordable Connectivity Program who, through the work of the Senator Charles Schumer and New York’s Congressional Delegation, now offers deep discounts on the Internet.

The project provided connectivity to the BASULTA area with 275 hotspots connected through the Zamboanga-Basilan broadband network, giving 2 million people in the region internet access for education and communication services from crisis.

SAMBALPUR: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Sunday that all villages in Sambalpur district will have access to internet services next year. Addressing a public meeting in the tribal dominated Jujumura bloc here, Pradhan said mobile towers would be installed in all villages under Digital India Abhiyan. “Our goal is to install mobile towers and make it easier to access internet services across the state,” he said.

Citing the example of a tribal YouTuber from Isak Munda district of Babupali in Jujumura, the Union Minister said, “Munda has become an internet sensation and has also been liked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Thanks to the internet, he was able to make productive use of technology and become a source of inspiration today. To empower other tribal youths like him, we will ensure internet access is available in every village in Odisha.

At the meeting, several people from Rairakhol constituency joined the BJP. Pradhan said: “It shows that people have great faith in Narendra Modi’s leadership. The membership of these people will strengthen the party organization in Jujumura.

Pradhan further informed that the rural employment and public works campaign “Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyan” will be strengthened in the coming days. “We are also working to ensure that the benefits of Garib Kalyan Yojana reach every home,” he added.

Earlier today, the Union Minister visited Basantpur area where the permanent campus of Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur (IIM-S) is being developed. He was shown a presentation on the 3D model of the campus. Pradhan also took part in a planting campaign organized there. Later he visited the Sainik school in Sambalpur.
